CCW
Frequently Asked Questions
Why might I want a Nevada CCW permit?
There are several good reasons to have a Nevada concealed weapons permit.
- (1) A CCW permit gives you the legal ability to carry a concealed handgun in Nevada, and currently 17 other states (in addition to Alaska and Vermont where no permit is needed.) That provides you the ability to defend yourself and your family as you travel.
- (2) A CCW permit is good for 5 years and replaces the "Brady check" requirement each time you buy a firearm. That saves you $25 on every firearm purchase, so if you buy a few guns the permit pays for itself. NOTE: Nevada CCW permit does NOT currently qualify for the $25 Brady fee exemption; see NICS Exemption
- (3) Because you can! As more law abiding citizens lawfully exercise their rights, politicians will be less likely abolish/amend the law.
- (4) It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!
What is the Nevada law governing CCW permits?
Nevada Revised Statute Chapter 202, Concealed Firearms. See NRS 202.3653 through NRS 202.369 (available at Nevada State Legislature NRS202). Please read the law before applying to determine eligibility, etc. As always, it is good advice to consult an attorney licensed to practice in Nevada if you have questions.
What is the role of the Nevada Sheriffs and Chiefs Association?
The Nevada legislature designated the NSCA to administer the program. The NSCA training standards are available for download from
Stillwaterfirearms Association Downloads. The NSCA website is www.nvsca.com.
How do I apply for a Nevada CCW permit?
Pick up an application package from the Sheriff of the county in which you reside. If you are a resident of another state, obtain an application package from the Sheriff of the county where you will apply. Attend a CCW permit class of instruction (see SFA class dates), with the firearms you intend to put on the permit. Once you have the certificate of training, you take it and your application back to the Sheriff, where you will be fingerprinted and photographed and pay the fees to the Sheriff, currently $100.25. The Sheriff will conduct a background investigation; if no disqualifying information is found, the Sheriff is required by law to issue your permit within 120 days. The Churchill County Sheriff's Office is known to be MUCH quicker, with six to eight weeks being common. If adverse information is found, you will receive an explanation of denial. You can only be denied for very specific reasons outlined in the statute and you do have recourse for appeal.
PLEASE NOTE: The CCW training class consists of classroom instruction, a written proficiency test, and a live-fire qualification segment. The CCW class is NOT a basic firearms handling class; you MUST already be proficient in the use of your handgun and demonstrate safe and competent gun handling skills.
Is Stillwater Firearms Association authorized to teach the Nevada CCW permit training class that is required by law in order to obtain a Nevada CCW permit?
Yes. SFA instructors are recognized by the Churchill County Sheriff to conduct the instruction. For a complete list of recognized instructors by county, contact the Sheriff's office in the county in which you reside (Nevada residents) or the county in which you intend to apply (non Nevada residents.)
I am a Nevada resident. May I attend CCW training in a county other than my home county?
Yes. Sheriffs are to honor other sheriff’s CCW Instructor certifications. NRS 202.3657 states a sheriff shall issue a permit to any person who is qualified and who submits an application and who demonstrates competence by presenting a certificate to the sheriff which shows that he successfully completed a course in firearm safety approved by a sheriff in this State.
Does the Stillwater Firearms Association CCW training class make me eligible to apply for a non resident permit in any other states?
Yes. Although not endorsed by any state governments, Handgunlaw.us and NRA-ILA are good sources of information (be sure to validate all information for yourself!)
For example:
How much does it cost to attend the Stillwater Firearms Association CCW permit training class?
- $80 for initial training (no limit on number of firearms with which you wish to qualify)
- $50 for renewal training (no limit on number of firearms with which you wish to qualify)
- $10 for subsequent additional firearm(s) shooting qualifications
Current members of the Stillwater Firearms Association receive a $20 discount from the above class fees and may subsequently add firearms (shooting qualification) at no cost.
Why are your classes less expensive than other authorized instructors' classes?
Stillwater Firearms Association is a Nevada non profit corporation. SFA believes in the CCW permit system and provides the necessary instruction as a service to the community. Proceeds are diligently utilized to further the organization's objectives as specified in it's Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws.
Where is the CCW permit class schedule published?
Stillwater Firearms Association offers the classes approximately bimonthly. Check our
website frequently for up to date information. Announcements are also promulgated via local newspapers, radio stations, and flyers.
