NICS Exemption History and Status

In 2008, BATFE revoked Nevadans' NICS exemption. An amendment to Nevada law was required in order to meet BATFE requirements.

AB-282 (2011 Legislative Session) was passed to meet federal requirements and signed into law by Governor Sandoval, effective July 1, 2011.

However, BATFE understandably does not monitor each state's legislature for possible changes. A request must be made to BATFE to reinstate our NICS exemption.

In spite of testimony in full support of AB-282, the Executive Director of the Nevada Sheriffs & Chiefs Association, a Nevada non-profit corporation, has delayed a "vote" on this topic, and has indicated that, for some unknown reason, ALL 17 Nevada sheriffs would need to approve of requesting the exemption.

SFA is pursuing reinstatement of the exemption for Nevada's CCW permittees using a three-pronged approach:

  1. Private citizens' letter requests to BATFE
  2. SFA letter to Governor Sandoval requesting direction to the Nevada Department of Public Safety to submit request to BATFE
  3. Appeal to all 17 Nevada sheriffs
